In 1974, the Terracotta warriors were unearthed at the gravesite of Qin Shihuamdi, the first emperor of China. The reign of Qin Shihuang promoted unity for the first time in China, during the Qin Dynasty (221-206 BC). The Terracotta Warriors are a form of funerary art, buried with the emperor with the purpose of protecting the emperor in his afterlife.
