Catalogue Entry

Approximatley 4,000 Chinese had made their home in Alberta when the Chinese Exclusion Act was passed in 1923. For the first half of the twentieth century, only a dozen Chinese families existed in Calgary amid several hundred married bachelors.

The first generation of Chinese Canadians who grew up in Calgary faced racial discrimination, making it almost impossible to find work in mainstream businesses outside Chinatown. In Calgary, residents occasionally attempted to pursuade the city to introduce and enforce restrictive measures against the Chinese community.

Our Chosen Land includes historical evidence, letters, and articles, highlighting racism and discrimination against Chinese Canadian citizens.
