Catalogue Entry
Chinese Ghostbuster: Drunken Zhong-Kuei is a Shiwan ceramic statue depicting Chinese Deity Zhong Kuei. Zhong Kuei is a common depiction for Shiwan sculptors. According to folklore, Emperor Tang Xuan Zong dreamt that Zhong Kuei, a military officer who failed the imperial exams, had ferociously captured and exorcised all the evil spirits that had been annoying the Emperor. Shiwan sculptors like to portray Zhong Kuei because he allows them to stretch their imagination and express their feelings freely through portraying the figure carrying out different acts.
